Grant funding is investment in projects that will help us to reach our overall goal: 90% of collected end-of-life tyres processed and sold into the Aotearoa New Zealand domestic market by 2030.

Research & development grants

Recipient: Environmental Decontamination (NZ) Limited

Summary: The aim of this project is to develop a staged mechanochemical process to convert end-of-life tyres and/or tyre crumb into a consistent, specification grade rubber powder for construction applications. This will develop a pathway to commercial adoption of tyre-derived rubber as a high-value resource.

Summary: This project aims to address and clarify concerns key stakeholders have about environmental impacts from the use of tyre derived products (TDP) in roads. The key output of the project is a consolidated TDP evidence compass. This will be a guidance document about what needs to be considered when adopting and trialling TDP solutions in New Zealand roads. It will align with the existing environmental harm assessment framework developed by WSP for NZTA.

Summary: This project will focus on identifying barriers in existing roading specifications that would restrict update of tyre derived product (TDP) bitumen binders in New Zealand.  It will recommend key changes, and test the draft recommendations before finalising them and making them available to NZTA.

Summary: This project aims to overcome a technical barrier preventing the widespread use of tyre-derived products (TDP) in the New Zealand roading sector. Building on earlier work by WSP and NZTA the project will optimise the emulsification process for devulcanised rubber (DVR) to create a modified binder emulsion that meets contractor performance targets.

Summary: New Zealand's first real-world installation of Porous Lane's Permeable Kerb & Channel system. This project will install the system at multiple test sites, and develop a case study positioning the product as an alternative to concrete construction.

Summary: A project to establish devulcanised rubber (DVR) as a viable alternate to established bitumen modifiers for asphalt that will meet the requirements of existing specifications MO1-A, M10. The project will include a demonstration project and a life cycle assessment.

Summary: A pilot that will trial and monitor the performance of Porous Lane by Watersmart's permeable pavement as a practical replacement for a traditional rain garden. The project aims to demonstrate how the surface can provide stormwater treatment, thermal relief and infiltration benefits without the cost space or maintenance requirements of other systems.

Summary: Installation of rubber safety surfacing in the senior playground using tyre derived product (TDP). This will improve hygiene and accessibility and reduce operational costs associated with woodchip.

Grants, are funded from the tyre stewardship fee, which is administered by the Ministry for Cities, Environment, Regions & Transport (MCERT) to fund Tyrewise, the regulated product stewardship scheme for end-of-life tyres.
