Getting ready for launch

Tyres. They've done their job. Now let's do ours.

There’s plenty of mahi required to launch Aotearoa New Zealand’s first regulated product stewardship scheme. Together, we can make it happen. 

Phased roll out

Tyrewise will have a phased roll out with three key stages:
  1. Completion of the Implementation Project – February 2024
  2. Regulation comes into effect, Tyrewise administrative launch – 1 March 2024
  3. Tyrewise operational launch – 1 September 2024
There’s plenty of detail behind the scenes but we’ve set out the key steps below.

Timeline

This timeline outlines the key stages of the phased roll out for Tyrewise.

June 2022

Implementation Project starts

Auto Stewardship New Zealand, the product stewardship organisation that governs Tyrewise, receives $1.2 million in funding from the Waste Minimisation Fund – Te Pūtea Whakamauru Para.

June 2022

Milestone 1-6

Practical building blocks put in place to prepare scheme for launch.

Completion date: 31/05/2023

September 2023

Regulation announced

Covers all pneumatic (air-filled) and solid tyres for use on motorised vehicles including cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, aircraft and off-road vehicles (‘regulated tyres’). These are Tyrewise Scope One tyres.

Milestone 7

Face-to-face visits with participants continue. Draft contracts prepared for transporters, processors and manufacturers. Industry and public education and awareness campaign commences.

Face-to-face visits with participants completed. Contracts confirmed with transporters, processors and manufacturers. Industry and public education and awareness campaign continues.

Phase 1

Launch

Regulation is in effect 1 March 2024. Tyrewise administrative launch.

This means:
• Tyre stewardship fee paid by Importer on regulated tyres (loose or attached to a vehicle)
• Tyre stewardship fee passed on through the supply chain to consumers at Point of Sale on regulated tyres (loose or attached to a vehicle)
• No Tyrewise-funded collections undertaken
• Environmental / disposal charges can be charged by retailers and collection sites to customers for end-of-life tyre disposal
• No incentives or payments made by Tyrewise
• Tracking software is not live

Tyrewise continues preparation for operational launch on 1 September 2024.

1 September 2024

Phase 2

Tyrewise operational launch

Tyrewise will be fully operational from 1 September 2024. This means:

  • Payment of fee at import or first registration continues for regulated tyres and is transparently passed on to consumer
  • Environmental / disposal charges cannot be placed on end-of-life tyres on which the tyre stewardship fee has been paid
  • Free collections start
  • Collection Site, transport, processing and manufacturing payments & incentives start
  • Tracking software live for booking collections & transport
Phase 2

late 2024

Scope Two tyres

Consultation to begin to include tyres for bicycles and non-motorised equipment and coils for retreads in Tyrewise.

Date to be confirmed – likely to be late 2024.

The Tyrewise Implementation Project has been funded by the Waste Minimisation Fund – Te Pūtea Whakamauru Para (WMF), which is administered by the Ministry for the Environment.
