The Tyrewise scheme reached a significant point recently when it completed its fourth milestone, marking 13 months since end-of-life tyre collections began.
The milestone four report covers 1 July to 30 September 2025 and details the work of the scheme to ensure end-of-life tyres are collected and recycled.
The highlights
The scheme continued to grow in terms of registered partners, public collection sites, and tyre-derived products and fuel sold in New Zealand, among other metrics.
As of 30 September there were 5061 locations. This includes 101 public collection sites, covering every region in the country except Southland. In this period 11 new public collection sites were added, coupled with a 7% increase in tyres from public collection sites.
There were 6,099 active user accounts in the Tyrewise app and 23,100 tyre collection jobs created – a consistent quarter-on-quarter increase of 12% since the start of 2025.
Puna Taurima, the Tyrewise Fund, invited expressions of interest, with 61 received covering research and development, emerging market projects, and community development projects. After being assessed, 42 were invited to proceed with a formal application.
Engagement with stakeholders remained a focus, with 755 site visits to participants or prospective participants during the quarter – up from 515 in the previous reporting period. A survey was again conducted which showed positive sentiment among those aware of tyrewise grew to 75%.
Areas of focus
The lack of public collection sites in Southland continues to be a focus area. Processing capacity in the South Island continues to lag, which results in significant exports to foreign end markets.
The priorities for the next quarter include:
- Expanding South Island processing capacity and off the road tyre (OTR) solutions
- Improving app usability and training for participants
- Advancing market development initiatives to grow domestic demand for tyre-derived products
