WHAT THEY DO
Able Axcess specialises in mobility solutions which improve safety and mobility for their residential and commercial customers. Their range includes customisable rubber threshold ramps, made from recycled tyres sourced right here in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Before the Tyrewise scheme they had to import material made from recycled tyres, but the consistency of locally available material enabled by the scheme means this is no longer necessary.
The ramps help with access over small steps and doorways and can be used by wheelchairs and walkers. They are made by combining crumbed tyre rubber with an adhesive and can be formed into tailor-made shapes for specific needs.
When the ramps are no longer needed, they are either used at another site or sent back to a tyre processor so they can be crumbed, and the material reused.
“We decided to use recycled tyres in our product because not only do we believe we need to stop wasting tyres in New Zealand by sending them to landfill, but they are an excellent material for our ramps. The weight is very good, the ramps are extremely durable, and they are full-cycle because they can be recycled over and over.”
